Do you feel invisible?
You may think that you’ve come out, and you see yourself as a proud member of the LGBT community. But if you’ve come out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer to your friends, family and coworkers, you’re still hidden. Why? Because without the data that identifies the LGBT community, LGBT people are invisible in the eyes of our government. Completely invisible. And that’s why we need to Queer the Census!
We’ve been working to make sure that we’re ALL counted by urging the Census Bureau and federal agencies to count us. We won the first step of this battle when the Census counted same-sex couples in its 2010 survey, but that’s just a beginning.
We know the LGBT community is more than just same-sex couples.
There are still no questions that ask INDIVIDUALS if they’re lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender on the 2020 census or the hundreds of smaller, yearly surveys from the federal government.
Being identified and counted isn't just a numbers game. It’s not just about faceless chunks of data, either. It’s about people.
How can our cities and communities provide the vital services we need for our health, safety, and families if we don’t even know how many LGBT people there are in our country? It’s the results of hundreds of smaller federal surveys along with the Census that set national and state funding and policy priorities. Having a real count of how many Americans identify as LGBT will really strengthen our fight for full equality.
All that’s why the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force launched the Queer the Census campaign in 2009 and why we need you to take action again now. It doesn’t matter if you’re LGBT or an ally of our community. We have to make sure that LGBT people are accurately counted by the federal government, and we can’t make that happen without your help. Can we count on you to join our campaign?
Thanks for your support to help Queer the Census and make sure that everyone is counted!
